  • Skim or low-fat milk. Some people like to start their day with a tall glass of milk, while others may use it as a creamer for their coffee or tea. Whatever their reason for drinking it, make sure they are drinking skim milk or 1% low-fat milk. There is no difference in the taste compared to whole milk and offers just as much calcium, yet has significantly fewer calories.
  • Substitute ingredients. Almost any recipe can be made healthier with a simple ingredient switch. For example, if the recipe calls for sour cream, try plain yogurt instead. Or if cream cheese is needed, use ricotta cheese. The possibilities are endless without having to sacrifice the taste of the elder’s dish.
  • Limit sugary dairy foods. Chocolate milk may taste delicious, but has a hefty amount of sugar. The sugar from flavored dairy products could end up causing the elder to gain weight due to the empty calories. Avoid stocking the refrigerator with fruit yogurt, flavored milk, frozen yogurt, and pudding.
  • Lactose-free milk. Since the digestive system changes as we get older, the bodies of some seniors are unable to break down the lactose in dairy products. If your loved one is lactose intolerant, there are a wide range of lactose-free products available. Soymilk, lactose-free milk, or some leafy green vegetables will provide the same amount of calcium as milk.
  • Avoid these dairy-like products. Some foods trick us into believing they are part of the dairy food group and are therefore good for us. These foods include cream cheese, butter, and cream. They are high in saturated fat and provide very little nutritional content.
