Senior Care in Lakeville MN

June is National Candy Month. Just because your parent is getting older does not mean that they cannot have fun enjoying the nostalgia of candy. If they are on a senior care journey it is likely that nutrition is an important focus of their life and their care efforts, and indulging in candy is not something that generally fits into dietary guidelines. Fortunately there are ways that your parent can celebrate the fun and sweetness of candy without completely throwing aside their healthy eating lifestyle.

Let these ideas inspire you for ways that they can have fun celebrating National Candy Month with you or with their senior health care services provider:

• Make homemade candy. It is always more enjoyable to indulge in something that you make yourself, and for a senior this project can be a fantastic source of mental stimulation and activity. Making homemade candy is nowhere near as difficult or daunting as it seems, and much of the fun is the actual process of making it. If your parent is suffering from cognitive limitations or physical difficulties that make it more challenging for them to lift or manipulate items, it is essential that you or your parent’s senior care provider is there with them during this process. Candy making involves very high heat that can cause serious injury if not handled properly.

• Send a special gift. Your parent can have fun with candy without having to eat it themselves by sharing the sweetness with friends, family, and other important people in their lives. Encourage them to choose people in their lives who are meaningful to them and who they would like to acknowledge. This can be a grandchild who is graduating from school or getting married, a neighbor who is going through a difficult time, or even their medical team who has given them such fantastic care. Put together a gift basket filled with their favorite types of candy or candy that makes your parent think of that particular person.

• Pamper them with sweetness. Let favorite flavors of candy inspire your parent to make their own homemade body products so that they can nurture their body and pamper themselves with candy without the calories. For example, this body scrub is highly exfoliating and moisturizing and has a bright, sweet scent reminiscent of a lemon drop. Replace the lemon juice and lemon zest with cocoa, chocolate extract, and mint extract for a chocolate mint version.

What You Will Need

  • 3/4 of a cup of olive oil
  • 3 cups of sugar
  • One lemon, juiced
  • The zest from two lemons
  • 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract
  • Twine
  • Shipping tags
  • A couple of jars with lids
  • A large mixing bowl

What to Do

  • Pour the sugar into the large mixing bowl
  • Mix the oil and vanilla extract into the bowl with the sugar
  • Zest the two lemons over the bowl and mix well
  • Juice the one lemon and add it to the mixture as well
  • Mix until well combined
  • Scoop into the glass jar
  • Cover with the lid
  • Attach the shipping tag to the twine
  • Tie the twine around the lip of the jar

When your parent is ready to use the scrub, have them dampen their skin and massage a scoop of the scrub into it with circular motions. Rinse thoroughly and follow with a high quality moisturizer.
